Teeth whitening

With whiter, more beautiful teeth you do not only feel better; you also smile more and you get more positive feedback from our environment.

What stains your teeth?

There may be several causes behind stained teeth:

  • genetic reasons, inherited conditions;

  • the consumption of foods that stain your teeth such as coffee, tea, red wine, or coke;

  • smoking;

  • the accumulation of dental plaque;

  • certain medications may also stain your teeth.

Stains may develop because your teeth consist of two layers: an inner, darker layer, the dentine, and an external, harder, lighter layer of enamel. The outer layer may contain microscopic cavities that the naked eye cannot see. Pigments may get lodged in these cavities. Over time, the outer layer of enamel may also start to wear out, become thinner, and the dentine may become more and more visible.

What does teeth whitening involve?

Teeth whitening, a fast procedure with spectacular results, consists of the following steps:

  1. Your dentist checks your teeth for cavities. If there are any, the necessary treatment will be administered.

  2. All stains and dental plaque will be removed from your teeth through a dental hygiene inter-vention.

  3. Your dentist or dental hygienist protects your gum with a special barrier gel to ensure that the whitening agent causes no irritation or sensitivity.

  4. Then, your dentist or dental hygienist applies a special whitening gel to your teeth. (This mate-rial has been developed to not only whiten your teeth but also to oxidise any impurities or stains.) The gel contains hydrogen peroxide.

  5. To start and catalyse the action of the whitening gel, blue curing light is applied for three 10-minute periods.

  6. At the end of the whitening process, your dentist or dental hygienist removes the barrier gel from your gum. In order to prevent any potential sensitivity, a coat of protective liquid will be gently brushed onto your gum.

When should you have your teeth whitened?

However well-groomed you may be, neglected or stained teeth can really damage the overall impres-sion. It is also a good idea to have your teeth whitened if you would simply like to have more beautiful teeth. Teeth whitening is purely an aesthetic issue. Medically it is never necessary.

Professional teeth whitening is a safe treatment. However, there are more and more commercially available self-applied teeth whitening products that are “affordable” but not without risks. For safe, durable, and spectacular results, the teeth whitening treatment must meet the following criteria:

  1. Professional knowledge and experience

  2. Reliable teeth whitening materials

  3. High-quality whitening curing light

You can only be sure of success and minimise risks if these three elements are equally and simultane-ously guaranteed at the time the whitening procedure is executed. Be careful with commercial offers that sound too good to be true!

Teeth whitening: at home or at the dental clinic?

Teeth whitening is only safe if it is performed at a dental clinic. Only a dental clinic has the professional knowledge and experience that may be needed during the examination, the preparation, the teeth whitening procedure, or the after care (not to mention occasional individual reactions that must be addressed immediately by experienced professionals).

Teeth whitening at home may seem very comfortable because you do not need to visit the dental clinic and may perform the entire procedure at home while watching television. However, there are a number of considerations that may question the safety of whitening your teeth at home.

  • Can you be sure that you have purchased a quality and effective teeth whitening product that comes from a trustworthy manufacturer and does not damage your health?

  • Without a preliminary check-up performed by a dentist, can you be sure that you have no den-tal problems that may cause pain or discomfort during the teeth whitening process?

  • If you have plaque or tartar on your teeth, will teeth whitening be actually effective?

  • Can you protect your own gum during the teeth whitening process to ensure that the teeth whitening product does not damage it?

  • Can you apply the teeth whitening product to your teeth in a professionally sound manner?

  • What do you do if the teeth whitening product of your choice causes sensitivity?

It may be a good idea to consider these questions for a second. Professional teeth whitening at a den-tal clinic is always a safe alternative.

Whether to have your teeth whitened or no seems to be a simple decision, but do nut run an unnec-essary risk. If you contact an experienced professional, you avoid unpleasant surprises and will not be disappointed when you see the result. All you need to do is call +36 30 206 9532 for an appointment and visit our dental clinic in downtown Szeged for a one-hour session of teeth whitening. We look forward to seeing you!

Why laser teeth whitening is better in comparison with other methods?

While by using old-fashioned methods (that could be executed at home) the tooth colour can only be brightened by some degrees, the bio laser teeth whitening technology ensures a much more significant result, up to 10 degrees of colour shade, or even brighter.

Biolaser teeth whitening also takes much less time, than any other type of teeth whitening method. Altogether, the procedure of teeth whitening takes not more than 20 minutes, which is preceded by the cleaning of the teeth and by the tartar removal.

The biolaser is the most appropriate way to stimulate the effect of the tooth whitening gel. For this technology requires a special, expensive equipment (the diode laser), in Hungary only some distinguished dental clinic can make use of it.

If you follow the right instructions, you can preserve the shiny, white color of your teeth for a long time.

Frequent questions regarding teeth whitening

What lasting result can be reached by teeth whitening?
How long you can preserve your white teeth depends basically on your engagement to follow our instructions after the teeth whitening treatment. Directly after the treatment, please avoid drinking coffee, cola, tea, red wine and do not eat chocolate, red pepper or any other food containing natural or artificial colouring ingredients. Even later, to consume these will have an impact on the color of your teeth, anyway. Smoking is to be avoided, too! Tobacco (nicotine) can stain your teeth, making them yellow.

Can fillings and crowns be whitened?
No, unfortunately this is not possible, we can successfully work only on the original color of the tooth. When disturbing, a couple of weeks after the teeth whitening, we change the old fillings, to harmonize their color with the new color of your teeth. In case of crowns and bridges, we suggest you to have your final crowns and bridges done only after the teeth whitening treatment.

I have heard that dental enamel is damaged by teeth whitening. Is that true?
The biolaser treatment executed by our dental hygienic expert in our dental clinic is completely harmless regarding dental enamel.

Is the treatment painful?
No, it is not. At the end of the treatment, our dental hygienic expert brushes your teeth with some tooth protecting material. Some random, temporary sensibility may occur, but this, however, can be decreased by using the toothpaste labelled sensitive. Please, during the forthcoming two weeks right after the teeth whitening treatment, do not consume very cold, or very hot food!

  • red pepper
  • tannin
  • tomato, berries
  • walnut, tobacco (smoking is forbidden, too!)

What is the convenient timing of the teeth whitening treatment?

Most of the times, our clients demand the teeth whitening treatment for some special occasion. But usually these occasions, such as family celebrations, Christmas, weddings, give the ideal opportunity to consume colouring food and drinks (for example: red wine, fish soup, stew, chocolate cake, etc.) which can darken the reached tooth colour and diminish the result of teeth whitening. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to schedule your teeth whitening treatment at least two weeks before the special occasion or the big event!

If you need tooth-filling, changing the old filling or if you need a crown, your dentist selects the colour of filling or crown regarding the new tooth colour that has been reached by whitening. Therefore, these treatments should be scheduled for after the teeth whitening treatment.

In case of oral surgery treatment, we also suggest you to fix the time of teeth whitening thereafter. If such a solution is not possible, then we suggest the schedule for oral surgery treatment at least two weeks after the teeth whitening. However, the best is to avoid any dental treatment during a period of two weeks following teeth whitening.

Teeth whitening treatment is always preceded by tartar removal.
